Cependant, l'appellation e-sport étant assez récente dans la littérature scientifique, le concept de jeux vidéo a été jumelé à d'autres ensembles de concepts (compétition, réseaux sociaux/plateformes de jeux collaboratifs et noms de jeux vidéo associés aux e-sport) afin de capter les documents référant au concept d'e-sport sans contenir ce terme.
